Preps
5.1 features a new JDF import functionality, providing the first
opportunity for thousands of users worldwide to implement useful
connectivity between estimating and prepress departments. Preps
can now import JDF files from management information systems (MIS),
delivering easy-to-use, inexpensive JDF. When a JDF file is imported,
Preps expresses the JDF as a new Preps job and attempts to match
the imposition details specified by the MIS with existing Preps
templates. If a valid match is found, Preps will automatically
populate the signature list. If no match is found, Preps will
create a placeholder signature, which can be resolved once an
appropriate template is created. Preps can then export a JDF file
that includes the original JDF plus the JDF imposition layout
and mark flats. The JDF can be used downstream by prepress workflows,
or upstream by the MIS system to update imposition details from
the missing original.

PDF imposition
The
smart sheet optimisation feature is now shipping in Pandora Pro
2.5.
Imagine a scenario where several different diecut objects need
to be planned onto a sheet, minimising waste and getting the nearest
match to the required number with the most economic use of expensive
substrate. With experimentation, a calculator or pencil and paper
and you might get a reasonable compromise. Then you still have
to create the artwork in multi-up format with the correct spacing,
nesting etc. With Pandora Pro this is a thing of the past. Simply
type in the number of each artwork item you need, the allowable
rotation and the size of the printed sheet, and it calculates
a solution in seconds. If you don't like the result, change the
sheet size or the margins and it calculate it again. Once you
are happy with the small layout preview display, click the button
for a detailed preview of the artwork in place on the screen in
front of you. You can apply marks, including 'SmartMarks' which
position automatically, from a library and then output the film
or plates required using the superb colour mapping and organisation
within Pandora.
If you are producing square cut items the procedure is the same
but Pandora Pro will then allow you to output a CIP3 data file
which can used to set up the sequence on the cutter.

of costly mistakes.Taking JDF job bag information from MIS systems
(such as Optimus, Prism, Tharstern,
Technique, Print Cafe and Shuttleworth),
it intelligently automates creation of impositions, exports
Preps templates and jobs along with CIP3 cutting and binding
data.
UpFront
exports Preps job files, complete with blank pages are an alternative
to templates. The Preps templates can be used within Apogee,
Prinergy, Brisque and Rampage
workflows which all use Preps as the core imposition engine
CIP3 data can be exported, in addition, to programme enabled
cutters, binders and folders from Polar-Mohr, Wohlenberg, Muller-Martini,
Heidelberg and MBO.
A forwards/backwards button improving navigation, an ability
to save partially completed jobs, built-in intelligence remembering
your working pattern and offering your last set up in a similar
job all save considerable time in getting a job into production.
UpFront provides a simple and fail-safe way of planning a print
job into the end-to-end print manufacturing workflow, automating
the imposition while allowing late changes, such as non-availability
of a press, to be accepted with minimum disruption. UpFront
does not deal in content, producing imposition diagrams and
the shell of the publication as Preps templates, into which
the content can be flowed.
